The importance of Problem solving
The business environment enveloping companies is becoming harsher and
demanding. To ensure continued growth in rapidly changing industrial
society, corporations are adopting various survival strategies. These may
include actively pursuing technical innovations, instituting sweeping
organizational reforms, and stripping away unprofitable divisions.
Meanwhile our workplaces are also undergoing tremendous upheavals.
Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) and Automation are being introduced
and production lines are continuously being reorganized to increase productivity.
The roles of department managers, Team leaders, supervisors and others are
becoming more and more important and demanding. In other words, there has
never been such a great need before for Competent Workplace Leaders as it
is now.
But what are
competent workplace leaders?
They are the people who take their own decisions and solve their own
problems rather than highlighting them in front of their superiors.
In turbulent times of today, we must discover, formulate and solve
serious new problems rather than avoiding them or pretending they did not
exist. If not, we do not fulfill our role as
Workplace Leaders and our companies do not reach their full potentials. In
such a case we fail to Crete true purpose
in the lives of our employees and co- workers.
Experts say that problem-solving ability is neither inborn faculty
nor it is possessed by certain types of people. It can be developed through
continuous training and hands- on practice over a period of time.
Which is the right time
to solve problems?
Basically a problem should be solved as soon as it is discovered.
However, a professional insight would suggest us to be proactive, Thus
there are four stages of discovering and solving problems, as shown in the
diagram below: -
More often than not, human beings are procrastinators by nature; hence
most problems are detected in the bud or flower stage when they become
unmanageable. This is what we call as Fire Fighting. It will be the best to
identify and solve the problem in seed stage, but it needs lots of insight
and problem consciousness.
The Q.C. problem solving approach is being used with great success in
